Not enough time in the day? How to get your time back

Email, text, messenger, likes, comments, slack channels, not to mention actual real-life interactions with your family, friends and colleagues. We live in a world of constant stimulation and it’s easy to become ‘busy’ with the various time vampires that suck away our productive time in the day. 🧛‍♂️

So often we have a tendency to REACT to our environment, rather than consciously design what we want to see in our life. It can feel like we’re constantly playing catch up.

The good news is there is a way to beat ‘being busy’ and become better at designing the life you want. It centres around FOCUS. 👀

There are three things that compete for our time and attention and steal our focus.

Pain – avoiding pain at all costs means we direct attention to things we fear (so we can avoid them).

Pleasure – we place our energy into things that give us pleasure (and relief from pain) – TV, food, exercise, alcohol etc. Some behaviours are neutral, and some are destructive.

The Demands of Others - we can let the demands of other people control our lives.

When we lose focus, we don’t feel prepared when things surface. This is when situations can feel like they are getting out of control, impacting our career, business, finances, health, family life and how we connect with others.

Bottom line, refocusing and not giving energy to the things in life you don’t want, enables you to be READY rather than reactive. So how might that look practically?

🙅Eliminate Distractions – Take a digital detox and shut down social media at certain times in the day. Sandbox the time when you reply to emails, so you aren’t reading and replying to email alerts all day. Close your office door and hang a sign which states ‘Focussed Work In Progress – Back At 1:00PM’.

⌛No Extra Time – When you’re driving, travelling or ironing and it requires no extra time for you to listen to a powerful mindset podcast or audio book, play the podcast or audio book.

🛍️Outsource – If you notice grocery shopping is taking up too much of your time including travelling to and from the store, order online and get your groceries delivered. Could you engage a VA to support the administrative tasks in your business? What about a cleaner each fortnight at home?

Focus on WHERE you want to go, not what you fear. In so doing, you can focus on the life you want, not reacting to the one you have.
